Kickfire derives its power by leveraging the latest database column-store, compression, and intelligent indexing techniques and marrying them to the world’s first SQL Chip. At a high level, here’s how Kickfire works.
Kickfire first breaks an SQL query into a parallel execution plan, consisting of a handful of macro operators as opposed to the trillion of low-level instructions typically required by other systems. This plan is then fed into Kickfire’s SQL Chip which sets the processes to work in parallel. Relevant data is retrieved directly from memory, in a compressed format. Because of this data-centric approach, the single SQL Chip outperforms 10s of general-purpose CPUs when processing large data volumes.
Kickfire uses a column-store data store, machine-readable data compression, and a large centralized memory to get data to the SQL Chip as fast as possible. Kickfire’s intelligent indexing selects only those specific pieces of the compressed columnar data needed. Then a process called “smart pre-fetching,” predetermines the data needed to be moved into memory, eliminating I/O latency.
The result of Kickfire’s highly innovative approach delivers industry leading performance using an order of magnitude less processors, disk, power, and rack space. This is why we are comfortable saying that Kickfire delivers the best performance per dollar, Watt, and square foot in the industry.
